KDP Cover Design

Designing a cover for Amazon KDP means getting the print math right — not just the art. I size your spine to your page count, set up the right bleed and safe zones, and deliver a CMYK print-ready PDF that uploads to KDP on the first try.

How I Get the Print Math Right

The technical side KDP authors shouldn’t have to think about.

  1. 1

    Spine width

Calculated from your trim size, final page count, and paper weight (white or cream). I size it to the millimeter so the spine type sits where it should.

  2. 2

    Bleed and safe zones

KDP requires a 0.125" bleed on all outer edges and specific safe margins around spine text. I build these in from the start so nothing gets trimmed off.

  3. 3

    CMYK + 300 DPI

Print-ready files live in CMYK, not RGB. I deliver a 300 DPI CMYK PDF that matches what prints on paper — no nasty color surprises when the proof arrives.

  4. 4

    Upload-ready

The final PDF drops straight into the KDP or IngramSpark cover field. If the platform’s review ever kicks the file back, I fix it — no extra charge.

KDP Cover FAQ

What do you need from me for a KDP paperback cover?

Trim size (for example 6×9, 5.5×8.5, 5×8), final page count, paper type (white or cream), and whatever you’d like on the back — blurb, author bio, tagline. Plus the cover brief: genre, tone, and a few references you love.

What’s the difference between KDP’s cover creator and a custom designed cover?

KDP’s cover creator is templates and stock photos. A custom cover is built around your book — typography, color, imagery, and mood all chosen to match your story and genre. Readers can see the difference in two seconds of scrolling, and that difference is the whole game on Amazon.

Does this work for KDP hardcover too?

Yes. KDP hardcover uses a different wrap spec — a different spine calculation and case-laminate finish. I handle both paperback and hardcover. Just tell me the format up front so I can build the file to the right spec.

What if my page count changes after we finish the cover?

Spine resize is free. Send me the new final page count and I’ll adjust the wrap and send a new PDF. Page count does shift during proofreading, so plan on this.

Do you upload the cover to KDP for me?

No. KDP is your publisher account and I can’t log in on your behalf. But I deliver files in exactly the format KDP wants, and if anything gets kicked back by KDP’s review, I’ll fix it.

Does the same file work for IngramSpark?

Usually yes. IngramSpark uses similar specs to KDP with slightly different bleed and spine tolerances. Tell me up front if you’re planning to distribute through IngramSpark as well and I’ll set the file up to work for both.
